Vol. 220 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Vocational School Principals.

40.

asked the Minister for Education what qualifications are required by a vocational teacher to be appointed as principal of a vocational school.

The relevant regulations require as minimum qualifications that the person appointed as principal of a vocational school under a county vocational education committee should be a fully qualified teacher with a knowledge of Irish of the standard of An Ceárd-Teastas Gaeilge and with a capacity for organising and, in general, with not less than five years' whole-time teaching experience, preferably in the vocational education service. The choice of teacher for appointment as principal depends on the requirements of the particular school but should be such that he or she can be employed at the school for the appropriate number of teaching hours.

For schools under the vocational education committees for urban districts and for Dún Laoghaire Technical School, the Chief Executive Officer acts as principal.

Special qualifications may be required for posts as principal in certain large schools under the county borough vocational education committees.

These qualifications are determined by me for particular vacancies arising from time to time, in the light of the requirements of the school in which the vacancy arises.
