Vol. 220 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Membership of EEC.

1.

asked the Taoiseach if the Government are prepared to accept the full supra-national obligations of the European Economic Community in the event of the Irish application for membership being accepted.

As the Deputy is aware, our application for membership of the European Economic Community was made without any reservations in regard to the supra-national implications of membership. The Government's attitude in the matter remains unchanged.

Does the Taoiseach not consider that the subject matter of this question might be a very live and burning issue when our application for membership comes to be considered, in the light of the fact that France herself is not in favour of supra-national government and France has so far been the stumbling block to the admission of the United Kingdom and our application seems to be irretrievably linked with the United Kingdom?

As I said, our application was made without reservation in that regard.

Questions Nos. 2 to 5, inclusive, postponed.
