Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Mayo Landing Facilities.

15.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will state with regard to proposals for improvement of Clare Island Harbour, Westport, County Mayo (i) the date on which such improvements were first proposed. (ii) the present position regarding the proposed improvements, and (iii) when work on such improvements is likely to start.

16.

asked the Minister for Finance the present position regarding proposals for improved landing facilities at Roonagh Pier, Louisburgh, County Mayo.

With your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, I propose to take Questions Nos. 15 and 16 together.

The question of improving landing facilities at Clare Island and Roonagh was raised in June 1962 by the interdepartmental committee on island problems set up by my predecessor. Expenditure from State funds on these projects was subsequently approved in principle by the Government, the final decision, however, to await completion by the Office of Public Works of plans and firm estimates of cost. On the basis of this additional information, the Central Development Committee, which now advises the Government on island problems, agreed in July, 1965 that the expenditure involved in the provision of landing facilities at Clare Island and Roonagh was warranted. In view, however, of the present capital position it has not yet been found possible to make a financial allocation for these works.
