Vol. 220 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Mayo Flood Damage.

18.

asked the Minister for Finance if he is aware of the serious flooding which occurred in the Keenagh area, Ballina, County Mayo, with consequent damage to lands and property; and if he will extend the operation of the Moy drainage scheme so as to erect defending walls to prevent this damage and loss to the small farmers of this area.

The question of extending the Moy drainage scheme upstream of Crossmolina was very carefully considered when the scheme was being designed and again in 1962 following local representations. The building of "defending walls" would not be sufficient and channel enlargement, much of it in rock, would be necessary. The cost would be excessive in relation to the area of land benefiting and I regret that the extension of the scheme would not be justified.
