asked the Minister for Local Government the up-to-date position regarding the Clonmel regional piped water supply scheme; the cost of the proposed scheme; the area to be served; and when finance is likely to be available for it.

22.

asked the Minister for Local Government the present position regarding the Killurney regional piped water supply, County Tipperary; what is the cost of this scheme; what areas will be served; and when finance is likely to be available for it.

With your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, I propose to take Questions Nos. 21 and 22 together.

I understand that Tipperary (S. R.) County Council hope to advertise stage 1 of the Clonmel regional water supply scheme, which includes Killurney, for tender when the necessary lands have been acquired.

The estimated overall cost of the scheme is £453,000 and the estimated cost of stage 1 is £178,000.

The overall scheme will serve an area of approximately 39,500 acres which lies to the west, north and east of Clonmel, including a supply to the villages of Clerihan, Lisronagh, Marlfield, Glenconnor, Barne and Two-mile-Bridge.

A proposal to raise a loan of £178,000 to finance stage 1 of the Clonmel regional scheme is under examination.

I am not in a position at present to say when sanction to the loan proposals is likely to issue.

I appreciate that much of the reply deals with figures and I shall await the figures. In respect of the money that is required, if the Minister feels unable to make the money available in its entirety, will he indicate to the local authority what amount he might make available so that they may start on some of the schemes?

This will emerge from the indications we hope to give to local authorities in regard to the housing grants. The same sort of information will be available in regard to sanitary services, and that in the fairly near future. We are trying to get it worked out as closely as possible in relation to the money available and in regard to sanitary services. What local authorities will have to do is to make their choice as between one scheme and another.

May I express the hope that this vital information will be conveyed to the local authority prior to their estimates meeting which will take place pretty soon?

We will do the best we can. On the housing side, we hope to have the information available in time for the estimate meetings but I am not sure about the sanitary services.

Is there any deadline for the conclusion of these talks?

It will depend on the amount of money.

The Minister said he was having discussion with the local authorities on this matter.

That is right.

Is there any deadline by which they must furnish the information?

Not really. It is not a question of a deadline. It is a matter of asking them for information, inquiring what their various plans are and how forward they are.

I assume the Minister is urging on local authorities the necessity to conclude this business?

What we are really doing is seeking information to enable us the better to make a fair allocation.

The Minister is going to give them all they are asking for.

No, I would not say so.

Is the Minister aware that in County Dublin alone we applied a considerable time ago for £1,707,200? That is for this year and it is for projects that we should have under way. There is no sign of sanction.
