Vol. 220 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Mayo Exploration Work.

48.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he is aware of the presence of an oil substance in and around Lake Bunaveela and at Furnace, Keenagh, Ballina, County Mayo; and that iron ore was mined there many years ago; and what steps he proposes to take to have exploration work carried out in this area.

The records of the Geological Survey do not indicate the presence of oil in and around Bunaveela Lough. The Deputy's reference to iron ore at Furance, Keenagh, is presumed to refer to the old iron furnace at Mullenmore North, near Crossmolina where iron ore, some of it imported, was smelted in the 18th century. The low grade bog iron ore found in the peaty areas of North Mayo is no longer used in iron furnaces.

As to exploration in the area the Government does not engage directly in exploration; this is a matter for private enterprise.
