Vol. 221 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - University Recognition of Leaving Certificate.

77.

(South Tipperary) asked the Minister for Education if there is a proposal by the National University to discontinue recognition by 1967 of the leaving certificate as being equivalent to matriculation certificate; if he is aware that such a development will create difficulties for many people; and if he is in a position to make a statement on the matter.

The present position is that, in accordance with the powers conferred on the University by its Charter, the setting of conditions for entry to the university is an internal matter.

The recent decision of the Senate of the University in regard to changes in its matriculation requirements as announced publicly and as conveyed to my Department was as follows:

(1) In 1967 for purposes of obtaining matriculation on the results of the Leaving Certificate examination, a candidate must, in addition to complying with other conditions, have obtained honours at that examination in at least one subject of the matriculation programme. As from 1968, honours in at least two such subjects will be required. (2) As from 1967 inclusive a combination of Leaving Certificate and Matriculation passes will not be accepted for matriculation.

Some difficulties may arise, but so far I have not received any representations from the school associations on the matter.
