Vol. 221 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Dublin Employment Exchanges.

57.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare if he will give details of the structural improvements being carried out in Gardiner Street, Werburgh Street and Northumberland House employment exchanges, Dublin; and the cost thereof.

New floors have been laid in the public offices in Gardiner Street employment exchange and a new waiting room and interview cubicles are in course of being provided there. A new floor has been provided in the employment exchange Northumberland House as well as a new roof to the boiler-house. Two new toilets are also being provided in that office. The cost of these structural improvements is estimated at approximately £3,650. I might add that in addition to the structural improvements mentioned, the public offices and the exteriors at Gardiner Street and Werburgh Street employment exchanges have been redecorated and the stone facade at Gardiner Street has been cleaned.

Are these not little more than repair and maintenance jobs? Will the Minister say when steps will be taken to implement the substantial structural jobs which are recommended in the report on manpower policy?

I do not know that one could say there are substantial structural jobs recommended. Some of the improvements that have been made at Gardiner Street employment exchange do involve the provision of improved placement service facilities.

Precious little.
