Vol. 221 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Kerry Fishing Industry.

68.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries what steps are being taken to organise the fishing industry on the Kerry coast and to find remunerative markets for the catches that could be landed under proper organisation.

This matter has been receiving constant attention from An Bord Iascaigh Mhara. The marketing of increased catches should not present any difficulty.

69.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries if it is intended to allow heavy stern trawlers to fish and complete with inshore fishermen inside the fishery limits along the Kerry coast.

There are no Irish stern trawlers operating at present. Foreign registered fishing vessels of any size and type may not fish within the exclusive fishery limits except in the particular cases specified in the Maritime Jurisdiction (Amendment) Act, 1964 (Specified States) Order, 1965. I am satisfied that the Order adequately protects the interests of Irish inshore fishermen at present but I shall of course keep the situation under careful review.
