Vol. 221 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Hospitalisation Charges.

87.

asked the Minister for Health the number of civil bills issued by Dublin Health Authority in respect of non-payment of hospitalisation charges in each of the past three years.

Mr. O'Malley

I understand that the numbers of civil bills issued by Dublin Health Authority for recovery of charges for hospital treatment were as follows:—

Persons treated in the Health Authority's institutions:

Year ended 31st December:

1963

42

1964

13

1965

108

Persons treated on behalf of the Health Authority in general voluntary hospitals:

Year ended 31st March:

1963

308

1964

377

1965

190

Not all these cases go to court. In the year ended 31/3/65, the total number of hospital accounts issued to Health Act patients was 20,451. In that year the number of cases brought to court for non-payment of hospital charges was 144.
