Vol. 221 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - County Roscommon Flooding.

13.

asked the Minister for Finance if he is aware of the serious flooding which occurred in various parts of County Roscommon; and what steps he intends to take to remedy the situation.

I am aware that parts of County Roscommon as well as many other areas throughout the country have been affected by flooding this winter. A large part of Roscommon is drained directly by the Shannon and by tributaries which can be considered only in conjunction with a scheme for the main river. Some flooding occurred in the Boyle catchment area which includes the Lung and Breedoge rivers. This catchment area is at present being surveyed for the purpose of preparing an arterial drainage scheme for it.

Could the Parlimentary Secretary give us any idea as to when money will be spent on the drainage of the Boyle catchment area and also on the Shannon, as was promised prior to the last general election?

The survey is in progress at the moment.

The Parliamentary Secretary stated that there was a shortage of engineers and that work could not be undertaken on the Shannon. Would it not be possible to divert his swimming pool engineers and his ball-alley engineers to the Shannon?
