Vol. 221 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Civil Service Procedures.

7.

asked the Minister for Finance if the centralisation of Civil Service payrolls on a computer or other mechanical system has been considered.

8.

asked the Minister for Finance what progress has been made in the mechanisation of Civil Service procedures, particularly in regard to payrolls.

With your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, I propose to take Questions Nos. 7 and 8 together.

Substantial progress has been made in the mechanisation of Civil Service procedures and specially trained staff are constantly examining new possibilities of improvement. The procedures mechanised include payrolls. The centralisation of payrolls has been actively considered on a number of occasions but up to the present it has been found possible to make more rapid progress in improving efficiency by other means. The matter continues to be kept under review.

Reference to the measures to achieve the maximum efficiency in administration will be found in Chapter 7 of the Second Programme for Economic Expansion, Part II.
