Vol. 221 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Report on Position of Industry.

30.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will have a full report circulated to Members on the position of the industry which was the subject matter of a question on 23rd February.

I informed the Deputy on 23rd February, 1966, that this firm had met with unexpected difficulties which they are now trying to overcome. Publicity at this stage could prejudice the efforts of the promoters and, in any event, it is not the normal practice to publish information about the affairs of a private commercial firm.

I know that the Minister will agree with me that I have deliberately seen to it that no adverse publicity in respect of the firm arose as a result of my question, because the name and address was not given publicly. However, as Teachtaí Dála, we are entitled to know the facts when Government money is involved in a venture which certainly gives every indication of not even getting on its feet. Surely precedent should not transcend our right to know? This is one of about half a dozen firms involving about £3 million.

The Deputy should appreciate my position. I am not prepared to add anything to the reply. Perhaps the Deputy would repeat a similar question later on.

I feel that the Opposition will have to do something in this regard to get the information required.

Is the Parliamentary Secretary aware that the Minister for Industry and Commerce has, in fact, promised a report in relation to this industry? Our only anxiety, on this side of the House, is to see this industry succeed.

It is: you show every sign of it.

There is nobody more anxious than I am to see this industry succeed. We are asking these questions because of the danger of unemployment there at the present time, and for no other reason. I am surprised at the Minister for Social Welfare.

You might not be a bit.

Question No. 31 withdrawn.
