Vol. 221 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Repair of County Cork Schools.

39.

asked the Minister for Education if, in view of the fact that the number of pupils on roll at Derrygallon national School, Dromtariffe, County Cork, has increased during recent years and that the local parents association state that the attendance will not drop over the next five years, he will consider having repairs carried out to the existing structure.

My Department has fully investigated the question of the educational facilities to be provided for the pupils of Derrygallon national school. While the number of pupils has increased slightly in recent years, there is no evidence to suggest that the school would ever be more than a two-teacher school. I am satisfied, therefore, that it would be in the best educational interests of the children to close the school and have them conveyed by transport service to the new school to be built at Derrinagree where accommodation for five teachers will be provided. My Department is in communication with the Reverend Manager in regard to this proposal.

In the meantime, I have asked the Commissioners of Public Works for a report as to the works required to keep the present Derrygallon school building in a serviceable condition until the new school has been provided at Derrinagree. Arrangements for the execution of these works will be made as soon as possible.

asked the Minister for Education if he will state with regard to Kilmacdonagh, Ladysbridge and Kilcreaden national schools, County Cork, all of which are in urgent need of overhaul, what he proposes to do in regard to them.

My Department is at present investigating how the children of these areas can best be served in the matter of facilities for primary education. I hope to be in a position shortly to formulate proposals which will then be submitted to the school manager.
