Vol. 221 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Trade Attachés.

1.

asked the Minister for External Affairs the embassies and consulates to which a permanent trade attaché is accredited.

Part of the functions of Heads of Mission is the promotion of exports, visible and invisible, and in all our Missions abroad, excepting those at the Holy See and the United Nations, there are officers charged with trade promotion work.

How many trade attachés are there?

The Deputy did not ask me that.

The Deputy asked me the embassies and consulates to which a permanent trade attaché is accredited.

And I told him that in all our Missions abroad there are officers charged with trade promotion work.

Are these officers specialists in trade promotion work or are they the ordinary diplomatic representatives?

It depends. In London, for instance, there are two—I think it is two—representatives who are specialists in trade promotion. They are recruited from the Department of Industry and Commerce. There are two from Agriculture. If the Deputy wants the full list of all our officers, I will give it to him.

That is exactly what I asked for.

I told the Deputy the situation.

I would not agree.
