asked the Minister for Finance if he will state in respect of the period 1955-56 to 1965-66, inclusive (a) the total amount of State capital made available for directly increasing agricultural production, excluding electric power, but including arterial drainage, (b) the total expenditure on agriculture, (c) the total capital outlay of the State, and (d) the total expenditure under all heads from current annual taxation.

As the reply is in the form of a tabular statement I propose, with your permission, a Leas-Cheann Comhairle, to circulate it with the Official Report.

(I) The figures in column (c) represent total expenditure on the public capital programme. As full information is not available for 1965-66, the amount included for that year, £26.71 million represents expenditure financed from the Exchequer only.

(II) Current expenditure in column (d) is met from current revenue which comprises both tax and non-tax revenue. In years in which expenditure has exceeded current revenue the deficit has been met by borrowing.
