Vol. 221 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - System Building in Cork.

23.

Mr. Barrett

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will make a statement on the steps so far taken to introduce system building of houses for Cork Corporation.

General agreement has been reached with the housing authorities concerned on the nature and extent of a joint housing project arising out of the request made to me by Cork and Limerick Corporations to arrange for the provision on their behalf of 1,800 and 800 local authority dwellings, respectively, in their areas. Agreement has also been reached in principle on outline planning briefs for the Limerick area and for the Glen area portion of the project in Cork city. Certain other technical and planning aspects of the proposal are under consideration including the preparation of detailed contoured site plans for the sites, and the carrying out of a soil survey of each site.

Steps have been taken by Limerick Corporation to acquire all the necessary land. A small portion of land, however, is the subject of a compulsory purchase order which has been submitted to me for confirmation and is before me at present.

In the case of Cork, the corporation already have a site available in the Glen/ Assumption Road area for 600 dwellings. They, also, have taken steps to acquire such further sites as may be necessary. A site at Togher to take about 600 dwellings is the subject of a compulsory purchase order which has been submitted to me for confirmation and is at present under examination in my Department.
