Vol. 221 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Secondary and Vocational School Resources.

47.

asked the Minister for Education how advanced his plans are for what he terms the pooling of the resources of secondary and vocational schools; the likely cost to the Exchequer of the implementation of such plans; and how far the rights of parents will be considered should the majority oppose such plans.

In January last, I issued a circular letter to the authorities of secondary and vocational schools, inviting their mutual co-operation with a view to making available in each area a curriculum broad enough to serve the needs of all their students.

The next step will be the holding of meetings at local level. In fact, some such meetings have already been held. Until such time as a complete picture of requirements is available, I will not be in a position to state what the cost to the Exchequer will be.

Having regard to the stated purpose of the co-operation asked for by me, I am unable to follow the Deputy in his speculations regarding parental attitudes.
