Vol. 221 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - GPO Room.

51.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs whether a room over the portico of the General Post Office in Dublin was evacuated; if so, when and why; and what steps are being taken to bring it back into use again.

The room referred to in the Deputy's question is part of the accommodation let to RadioTelefís Éireann. Accordingly, I am not in a position to supply the information requested by the Deputy.

Is the GPO not the property of the Department of Posts and Telegraphs?

Mr. O'Leary

It is not.

Part is rented to Radio-Telefís Éireann.

Is it not a fact that five months ago two rooms over the portico of the GPO had to be abandoned because the portico was parting company with the main building; was there not an architect's report to this effect and was it therefore not wrong for the Government to set off a second bomb to endanger the national shrine?

I am not aware of any such thing.

The Minister and the Government are well aware that the portico of the GPO is unsafe.

The Deputy will resume his seat.

You set off a second bomb——

Utter nonsense.

I now ask the Minister to lay on the Table of the Dáil the report of the architect who caused those rooms to be evacuated.

It seems to me the Deputy does protest too much.

They are very silent. What I say it true and they know it.

I have not finished with it. They will hear more of it later today.
