Vol. 221 No. 13

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Closing of Schools.

44.

(South Tipperary) asked the Minister for Education if he is aware of the widespread dissatisfaction amongst parents of children attending the national school at Templenoe, Cashel, County Tipperary, in respect of the proposal to close this school; and whether he has finally decided to do so.

Templenoe national school, County Tipperary, is a small two-teacher school which has been recommended for replacement.

Having given the fullest possible consideration to all aspects of the case, I am satisfied that the educational interests of the children from this area would best be served by closing Templenoe school and conveying them by transport service to a new central school to be erected at Rosegreen. I am in communication with the school authorities in regard to this proposal.

(South Tipperary) asked the Minister for Education if he is aware of the widespread dissatisfaction amongst parents of children attending the national school at Camphire, Cappoquin, County Waterford, in respect of the suggestion to close the school; and whether he has finally decided to do so.

This is a one-teacher school in which the teacher is unqualified. I would be failing in my duty as Minister if I did not proceed on the basis of having the children concerned provided for in a larger school. I am making the necessary arrangements with the school manager on this basis.

I have no doubt but that the educational benefits to the children will allay any misgivings that any of the parents may have.
