Vol. 222 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Local Authority Finances.

28.

asked the Minister for Local Government what progress, if any, has now been made with the Government's proposed review and recasting of the methods of raising local authority finances; and if, in view of the increasingly heavy burden imposed by the local rates and the urgent need to relieve this burden, he will expedite as much as possible the introduction of a more equitable and up-to-date system of raising the necessary finance.

I would refer the Deputy to my reply to a question on the subject by Deputy Coughlan on 2nd instant.

Is the Minister aware that on 9th March when discussing the motions on the Budget, I was assured by no less a person than the Taoiseach that if a man who had taxed his car for the first quarter went in before 1st April to tax it for the remainder of the year or for a full year, he would get it taxed at the old rate, and the people in the tax offices are now telling those people who are calling that the Taoiseach was simply talking through his hat?

He does that frequently.

Will the Minister instruct the tax offices to take the money at the old rate before 1st April?

I wonder could the Taoiseach explain why he gave a categorical "yes" on 9th March?

This does not seem to arise on the question.

It is local authority finance but the Taoiseach is silent.
