Vol. 222 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Carrick-on-Suir Technical School.

94.

asked the Minister for Education the up-to-date position regarding the new technical school at Carrick-on-Suir, County Tipperary.

On 9th March, 1966, I authorised the County Tipperary (SR) Vocational Education Committee to prepare working drawings and specification for the proposed new vocational school at Carrick-on-Suir. I await the submission of these documents.

Could the Minister say how it transpired that the original plans and specifications for this new muchneeded technical school in Carrick-on-Suir came to be revised by his Department? Why are the vocational committee now being put to the expense of preparing new plans for the school. Since the original plans had reached a final stage of completion and, I understand, were given virtual approval by the Department? Why has there been a change of policy in respect of these plans and specifications?

I do not know to which plan the Deputy is referring.

The original plan.

Which one does the Deputy mean by "original"? I know one set of plans was submitted a few years ago and subsequently my Department suggested to the committee that the size of the school should be increased. Further plans were submitted on this basis and, I think, were approved. But then there was a further revision, to the best of my knowledge at the instance of the committee, to allow for garage accommodation which had not been allowed for in the earlier plans. There were a number of plans involved and that is why I am not sure to which plan the Deputy is referring. There has been no undue delay on the part of the Department of Education in this matter.
