Vol. 222 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - County Tipperary Slate Quarry.

57.

andMr. Tierney asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will investigate the possibility of re-opening the slate quarry at Portroe, County Tipperary, thus giving much-needed employment in the district and eliminating the necessity for the import of slates.

The re-opening of the slate quarry referred to would be a matter for private enterprise.

Has the Parliamentary Secretary any information at all on this?

There was a question asked some years ago of the Minister for Transport and Power and in the course of his reply he pointed out that the number of slate quarries at one time or other was 28 and that five years ago only two were in production.

This would not be the official information of the Department at all?

It is known to exist but it is not a matter for the Department. It is generally regarded as totally uneconomic.
