Vol. 222 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Duty Free Import of Fishing Gear.

68.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries if he will make the necessary recommendations to the Minister for Industry and Commerce to grant an import duty free licence for all fishing gear imported by fishermen, including nylon cord, nets and floats.

I understand that fishing nets and netting, floats and fish-hooks are not subject to an import duty but that ropes, twines and other cordage and certain items of angling equipment are dutiable. Where import duty is involved the issue of duty-free import licences is a matter for the Minister for Industry and Commerce and I am not aware of any instances where such licences were unreasonably withheld. If the Deputy is aware of any case where hardship was involved perhaps he will furnish details.
