Vol. 222 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Shannon ESB Wires.

2.

asked the Minister for Transport and Power if there ESB electric wires crossing the Shannon at various places which are a danger to navigation; and, if so, if anything can be done to reduce or remove this danger.

I am not aware of any danger to navigation caused by lines erected by the ESB across the Shannon. Under the Electricity (Supply) Act, 1927, the Electricity Supply Board may not place any electric cable across any navigable waterway without previous consultation with me and my consent is given only where I am satisfied that clearance over the waterway is adequate.

Is the Parliamentary Secretary not aware that the Shannon is causing flooding?

Was it not to be drained 20 years ago?

We are aware of the audience in the Gallery. They are going to expect a lot of clowning today.

Your son-in-law described it as a circus.

The clowning is on that side.

(Interruptions.)

When the Taoiseach's son-in-law describes the farmers outside the gate as clowns and when the Taoiseach describes the people here as clowns, we know where we are going.

There is an election tension.
