Vol. 222 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Bandon Chicks Factory.

24.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce the latest position regarding Shannon Chicks Limited, Bandon, County Cork; and if he intends taking any further steps in this matter in view of the very great need for the establishment of such a factory in Bandon.

The Deputy will, no doubt, recall that in a reply to a question by him on 3rd November, 1965, on this project, I intimated that it had been reported that the promoters had decided to postpone the project because certain finance which they expected to get on the London money market was no longer available.

I am not in a position to add to that statement. The Deputy will appreciate that the matter is entirely one for the promoters, from whom any further statement must come.

Can we take it that it is now abandoned?

Is the proposal dead or is it still alive? Is the American company still interested in it?

From what I know of the activities of the private individuals dealing with this project and others, it is alive, but they have not made any new proposal.

Could the Minister say if the promoters have been in contact with them recently?

No, there has been no approach recently.

Can the Minister state when they were last in contact?

I answered that before. It is some time ago.

About last March.

Twelve months.

May I refresh the Minister's memory? It was the evening before the election in mid-Cork.
