Vol. 223 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Rates Increase.

34.

asked the Minister for Local Government what proposals he has to deal with rising rates.

35.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he is aware that thousands of ratepayers, especially small farmers and businessmen, are finding it impossible to pay the present high rates demanded; and if he will state, in view of the Taoiseach's statement of 22nd March, 1965 at Ballyshannon, what relief he has in mind for (a) rural ratepayers and (b) urban ratepayers.

I propose, with your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, to take Questions Nos. 34 and 35 together.

I would refer the Deputy to the statement which I made on 2nd March, 1966, in reply to a Question by Deputy Coughlan. I have nothing to add to that statement at this stage.

Has the Parliamentary Secretary anything to add to or take from the Taoiseach's statement of last year, or was that only a gimmick to win votes at the general election? "Let Lemass lead on".
