Vol. 223 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Rates Collection.

7.

asked the Minister for Local Government the amount collected per head of the population in rates for the year ended 31st March, 1966, and the estimated collection per head for the year ending 31st March, 1967.

The estimated amount of rates collected per head of the population in 1965-66 was £10-11-0 and the estimated amount leviable per head in 1966-67 is £11-12-7.

Is the Minister aware that the Taoiseach and the Ministers of the Government led people to believe, prior to the 1965 general election, that there would be a reduction in rates? Instead of that, there has been a 30 per cent increase. What action will the Minister take to honour the promise made then?

I am not aware of the fairy tale recited by the Deputy.

The Minister gave the figure of——

Yes, but we are giving more, and the ratepayers are paying more as well.

Prior to the general election of 1965, they were led to believe they would pay less. That was the promise.

It was not a promise.

A temporary promise.
