Vol. 223 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Housing Loans.

15.

asked the Minister for Local Government when it is proposed to make money available to Cork County Council to pay housing loans to applicants who should have been paid nine months ago, many of whom are waiting that length of time to go into new houses built and waiting for them.

Loans have already been sanctioned which will enable the council to draw as required on the full amount of their capital allocation for house-purchase loans for the current financial year. £85,000 has already been issued. I understand from the council that there is no foundation for the allegation that applicants whose loans have matured for payment are waiting nine months for the money. The council are currently dealing with payments which have matured since 1st April last. Temporary difficulties have, of course, arisen from the current banking situation.

Is the Minister aware that this statement was made about six weeks ago at a meeting of Cork County Council? Whom are we to believe?

I am not responsible for statements made at any of these meetings.

We have to accept the statement made by the officer in charge.

All I can say is I would rather the Deputy would accept my statement, but that is a matter for his choice.

16.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will state, further to a reply of 11th May regarding the application by Kerry County Council for a loan of £33,000 for the erection of 20 houses under the small farmers scheme, if he has now received a reply from Kerry County Council regarding their capital allocation for housing; and what is the present position regarding a loan for these houses.

I have been notified by the council that they propose to proceed with 22 rural cottages, including four cottages under the small farmers scheme, on the basis of their provisional capital allocation for new work in the current financial year. The appropriate loan accommodation will be made available to the council from the Local Loans Fund.
