Vol. 223 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Nurses' Superannuation Scheme.

35.

asked the Minister for Health the present position relating to proposals for a superannuation scheme for nurses in voluntary hospitals; and if, having regard to the urgent need for such a scheme, steps will be taken to expedite its implementation.

Mr. O'Malley

As I have already conveyed to the Irish Nurses' Organisation, I have accepted the principle of a general superannuation scheme for the staffs of voluntary hospitals receiving grants out of the Hospitals Trust Fund in recoupment of revenue deficits, and also for district nurses employed by voluntary agencies. Every effort will be made to avoid delay in the implementation of such a scheme.

When does the Minister hope the principle will be put into practice?

Mr. O'Malley

The superannuation schemes are completed. The details must be worked out before the scheme is put into effect. This is being done. The scheme will end the disadvantage which nurses in some voluntary hospitals suffer as compared with their counterparts in local authority hospitals with regard to provision for their retirement. The terms of this scheme will compare favourably with the local government superannuation code relating to corresponding staffs.

Will it be within the next year?

Mr. O'Malley

Yes.

Will it be within the next six months?

Mr. O'Malley

I said all this last week.

I notice that my question about six months has annoyed the Minister.
