Vol. 223 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Dublin Hospitals Dispute.

45.

asked the Minister for Health if, having regard to widespread anxiety caused by the dispute involving employees of 20 Dublin hospitals, he will ensure that the best interests of patients are not jeopardised thereby; and if he will make a statement to allay public anxiety.

Mr. O'Malley

On becoming aware that a majority of the non-nursing personnel of the Dublin voluntary hospitals, who are seeking improved working conditions, had rejected a Labour Court recommendation and that a serious situation was threatening to develop, I arranged earlier this month to receive a deputation from the Irish Transport and General Workers Union to discuss the matters at issue.

Following an exchange of views with the union representatives, I suggested that they should resume discussions with the employers under the auspices of the Labour Court and I offered my services in arranging a meeting. This suggestion was accepted by the union, whereupon I made an approach to officers of the Labour Court who consented readily to initiate further discussions between the union, the Federated Union of Employers and the Hospitals Commission. These discussions are now proceeding, and I am confident that an amicable settlement will emerge. The House may be assured that I will arrange, so far as I am concerned, to give immediate effect to the settlement reached.

While sharing the Minister's anxiety to see this dispute settled amicably, I should like to ask him whether any emergency steps are being taken in anticipation of any difficulties arising in order to avoid any inconvenience or discomfort to patients?

Mr. O'Malley

There will be an amicable settlement. There will be no necessity to take emergency steps.

It will not be like the ESB.
