Vol. 224 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Saving on Old Age Pension Reduction.

18.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare what was the benefit to the Exchequer resulting from the reduction in non-contributory old age pensions following the recent increase in British pensions to British pensioners resident here.

The adjustment in old age non-contributory pensions which under the law it was necessary to make in the case of persons whose British pensions were increased, enabled a sum of £152,500 approximately to be diverted towards the financing of the increases granted under the Social Welfare Act, 1966.

(Cavan): The Minister has told us the amount paid out in other social welfare benefits following the reduction in the pension but will the Minister tell the House the amount saved as a result of the reduction?

The amount I gave was the amount which it was possible to divert to giving the increases under the Social Welfare Act, 1966.
