Vol. 224 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Cattle Numbers.

1.

asked the Taoiseach the estimated number of cattle in the country at the latest available date, giving the number (a) under one year, (b) between one and two years, (c) between two and three years, and (d) over three years.

With your permission, Sir, I propose to circulate in the Official Report a statement giving the required information.

Following is the statement:

PRELIMINARY estimate of number of cattle in the State in June, 1966.

Description

Number (000)

Under 1 year

1,390.6

One year old and under 2 years

1,346.6

Two years old and under 3 years

907.6

Three years old and upwards

217.6

Breeding stock* (i.e. Cows, heifers in calf and bulls)

1,758.5

Total Cattle

5,620.9

*Not classified by age.

I wonder if the Parliamentary Secretary could extract from his statement the approximate total cattle population at present?

There is a question down about that.

Question No. 2.

Is my question not in order?

The figure is 5,620,900.

Could the Parliamentary Secretary give us an estimate of the total cattle population ten years ago?

I wonder are these inspired questions?

They are for the purpose of finding out how many cattle we will have to race at Aintree?

The figure was 4,536,500 in 1956.

Could the Parliamentary Secretary, or the Taoiseach, inform us if there is any plan or any market available to the farmers for the sale of the young cattle——

That is an entirely separate matter.

They were not bred for the purpose of racing them.
