Vol. 224 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Sale of Turkeys.

67.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries if there is a surplus of turkeys for the Christmas season; and what steps he proposes to take to have them sold at prices that will remunerate the producers.

On the information available there are no grounds for anticipating a surplus of turkeys for the Christmas market. As hitherto, the home and export markets will be available during the coming season for the sale of turkeys. Varying factors, such as supply and demand, can influence market conditions and prices.

Is the Minister aware that many turkey producers were unable to procure day-old poults on time and that this means a loss of 30/- or £2 to these people?

I do not accept that.

Does the Minister not accept there may be a glut for Christmas?
