Vol. 224 No. 13

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Dublin Public Lighting.

23.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he is aware of the growing frequency and duration of public lighting outages in Dublin; if he will ascertain the reason for Dublin Corporation's permitting public lighting to remain unlit for periods of up to a fortnight; and, if, having regard to the serious risks to life, limb and property caused by unlit streets, he will ensure that steps are taken to remedy the situation.

I am asking Dublin Corporation for a report on the points raised by the Deputy. Perhaps the Deputy would be good enough to repeat his question in a fortnight.

I appreciate the Minister's assistance in this matter but I wonder if I could press him to ensure that Dublin Corporation will give a realistic answer to this particular query and not the kind of answer that people have been getting for some time past, that as far as the bureaucrats are concerned, there is no disimprovement in the public lighting in Dublin city while thousands of people go for long periods of a week or a fortnight without light which, apart from being hazardous to traffic, encourages people to commit crimes of burglary and housebreaking?

I still suggest to the Deputy that he should put down a further question and I will have the information then.
