Vol. 224 No. 13

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Drugs and Medicines.

38.

asked the Minister for Health if he will consider making drugs and medicines available to those in the lower income group through chemists' shops rather than through dispensaries as at present.

I would draw the Deputy's attention to paragraph 48 of the White Paper on the Health Services and their Further Development. Discussions are proceeding with representatives of the pharmaceutical chemists on a scheme for the supply of drugs and medicines through retail chemists under the altered general medical service envisaged by the White Paper. In the meantime, the present arrangements for the supply of drugs and medicines at the dispensaries will continue in general operation.
