Vol. 224 No. 15

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Cattle and Sheep Losses.

25.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries the estimated annual loss, through diseased livers, of cattle and sheep.

The loss caused by diseased livers falls under three heads: (1) the inability of the affected animals to thrive normally; (2) the amount by which the price of exported livestock is discounted to anticipate liver condemnations on slaughter subsequently; (3) the condemnations of the livers on slaughter in this country.

It would be very difficult to make any sort of reliable estimates under heads (1) and (2) but the loss through condemnations has been roughly estimated at not less than £400,000 per annum.
