Vol. 225 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Redundant Employees.

63.

Mr. O'Leary

asked the Minister for Labour whether the proposed redundancy provisions will operate in the case of those employees displaced because of the recent amalgamation of two companies (particulars supplied).

64.

asked the Minister for Labour if, having regard to the reports of the pending redundancy of 58 men in an industry (particulars supplied) consequent upon rationalisation, he can give an assurance that the men in question will be retrained for alternative employment without loss within the scope of a national manpower policy.

With your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, I propose to take Questions Nos. 63 and 64 together.

I understand that the redundancies in question are not likely to arise until some time in 1968. I hope that by then schemes will be in operation for retraining under the Industrial Training Bill which is at present before the Oireachtas and for the making of redundancy payments under legislation which I hope to introduce in the near future. The eligibility of individual workers for retraining and for redundancy payments will, of course, depend on the provisions of the legislation approved by the Oireachtas. However, Deputies will, no doubt, have seen the announcement made by the company in regard to the payments they propose to make to workers who become redundant.

Mr. O'Leary

Under the redundancy occurring in the near future will the provisions of this redundancy legislation prove, for somebody working at any rate, to be retrospective?

It is not expected to have redundancies until 1968.

Mr. O'Leary

Would general redundancy provisions operate for people coming before the legislation?

There is a scheme for these workers already.

I take it that the redundancy scheme will not come into operation, in fact, until 1968.

The redundancies expected as a result of this amalgamation are not expected to arise until 1968. They have a scheme already to provide for it.
