Vol. 225 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Duty Hours of Gardaí.

96.

asked the Minister for Justice if members of the Garda were on duty for 12 and 14 hours on Wednesday, 19th October, without a break.

I regret to say that a number of Gardaí had to be kept on continuous duty for an unexpectedly long period during the NFA demonstrations in Dublin on the day in question.

Were arrangements not made beforehand? Why was it necessary to have Gardaí on duty for 14 and 15 hours, without any break for meals?

In my view, excellent arrangements were made.

Surely they were not prevented from getting meals?

They got meal breaks.

They got no meals for 14 or 15 hours. Surely special arrangements should have been made beforehand?

I spoke to some of them and they told me they got meal breaks.

There were meal breaks organised.

Some of them did not get meal breaks.

We will talk about it later.

What did the Minister say with his left hand? Will the Minister be able to get the man on his right in with that left hand?
