Vol. 225 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Telephone Tapping: NFA President's Statement.

105.

Mr. O'Leary

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs whether his attention has been drawn to the statement of the NFA President that the telephone line at NFA House had been tapped; and whether there was any arrangement between his Department and the Department of Justice whereby the phones of private citizens were being tapped.

I have seen the reported statement. Telephone communications may be intercepted in pursuance of warrants issued under the hand and seal of the Minister for Justice.

Mr. O'Leary

Is the Minister aware such a warrant was made in this case? Or is there any truth in the statement? Or has he any observation to make on the statement?

I am not aware of any such warrant being issued, and I have already answered the question.

Mr. O'Leary

In other words, the leaders of the NFA are telling lies when they say their phones were tapped?

They implied it; they did not state it.

Mr. O'Leary

It is incorrect to say their phones were being tapped?

So far as I am aware, it is incorrect.
