Vol. 225 No. 13

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Finglas (Dublin) Sub-Postoffice.

4.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he is aware of the fact that since the sub-postoffice on Ballygall Road, East Finglas, Dublin closed four weeks ago at least two premises, one a shed and the other a baker's shop, have been used to service the needs of the local residents; and if, having regard to the considerable number of residents in the area who are obliged to use the sub-postoffice for social welfare benefits and other important purposes, he will make a positive arrangement for the siting of the sub-postoffice and advise the people concerned through the public press of its location.

Following the resignation of the subpostmaster, the position was advertised but none of the candidates was able to offer suitably located premises for the sub-postoffice. Further inquiries are being made with a view to overcoming this difficulty and in the meantime the temporary arrangements for the payment of social welfare benefits are being continued.

Will the Parliamentary Secretary indicate, through an announcement in the press, where exactly the temporary sub-postoffice will be located so that the people concerned will know where to go?

I do not think that people seeking benefits have had any great difficulty in locating the source of the pay-out, but we are mindful of the difficulty in this area of locating a suitable office. The Deputy will appreciate that everything possible is being done. At the moment we are in negotiation with a potential lessor of premises.

I am not disputing the fact that everything possible is being done to secure alternative accommodation. What I am trying to find out is whether the Parliamentary Secretary will agree to put an announcement in the public press telling the people where this temporary post office is, in which street it is.

We can do that if necessary.

If you do not, how are the people to know the road or the street in which it is located?
