The number of sows slaughtered at bacon factories during the six months ended 30th November, 1966, was 19,948.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries if he will take steps to ensure that the acceptance of sows for slaughter will be carefully inspected so that any sows fit for breeding purposes will not be accepted at bacon factories.
I do not consider that action as suggested by the Deputy would be appropriate or useful.
The recently-introduced scheme of grants for farrowed sows will, of course, encourage the retention of suitable sows for breeding.
