Vol. 226 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Offaly Shoe Factory.

166.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce what is the latest information in his Department in regard to the re-establishment of the shoe factory at Birr, County Offaly where there are a great number of unemployed at present.

I have kept in close touch with the position of Birr Shoes Ltd. and with the various efforts made to revive the industry but, unfortunately, the efforts so far made have not resulted in finding a satisfactory basis for the revival of the firm.

Would the Minister be prepared to keep the matter before him for constant review?

I have been in very close personal touch with the situation here and I must, in all fairness, say the prospects do not look bright, but certainly if there is any chance at all of doing anything I shall avail of it.
