asked the Minister for Health if he will state in respect of each health authority hospital, the bed occupancy, the number of beds, the annual costing per bed and the type of work therein.
Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Health Authority Hospitals.
As the reply to this question is in the form of a tabular statement, I propose, with your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, to circulate it with the Official Report.
The cost given is the average daily cost per patient as this is the form in which this information is supplied to my Department. The figures of occupancy and cost relate to the year ended 31st March, 1966.
The hospitals are divided into eight different categories according to the type of service provided. A number of hospitals provide two or more of these services and are included in more than one category. Where this occurs the number of beds and the occupancy relate to the particular section of the hospital, while the cost relates to the entire hospital.
The bed complement given is the number of beds normally available. Where the average occupancy exceeds this it indicates that special provision had to be made to accommodate extra patients.
Following is the statement:
REGIONAL HOSPITALS.
These hospitals provide a general medical, surgical and, in a number of cases, maternity service. They also contain units for certain specialities such as paediatrics, ophthalmology, cardiology and ear, nose and throat conditions.
