Vol. 226 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Mayo Deep-Sea Fishing Port.

37.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries whether the survey at present taking place envisages a deep-sea major fishing port in either Blacksod Bay or Broadhaven Bay, County Mayo.

The purpose of the proposed survey, which will commence shortly, is to make an up-to-date appraisal of the landing facilities which are required to meet present and expected needs of the local fishing industry on the Mayo coast. The coastal areas of Blacksod Bay and Broadhaven Bay will be inspected by the survey team but I cannot forecast what the report and recommendations of the team may be in respect of either of those areas.

Does the Minister appreciate that both the areas mentioned were traditional fishing areas? Due to broken down piers, and so forth, and because of neglect by a native Government, the young men who hitherto engaged in these occupations have been forced out of employment. Would the Minister pay particular attention to the needs of these areas when the survey has been completed?

The Deputy can be quite sure that the North Mayo coast, of all places, will receive very careful attention.

I would say so.
