Vol. 226 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Taxation System.

99.

asked the Minister for Finance if he is examining the whole system of taxation in the light of what this country must achieve in free trade conditions, with special reference to industrial manufacturers; and what progress he has made in regard to this matter.

The general system of taxation is one of the matters which is kept under continuing review in connection with the transition to conditions of free trade. The Deputy is, doubtless, familiar with the provisions concerning taxation which are contained in the Free Trade Area Agreement with Britain.

Close attention is also being given to developments under this head in the EEC where the creation of a common market necessitates a certain degree of harmonisation of fiscal arrangements. Developments so far in the Community, however, have not in general reached the stage of firm decisions on the form and scope of such harmonisation.
