Vol. 226 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Conference of Mink Breeders.

2.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries if he is aware that an international conference of mink breeders took place recently in England with a view to organising a European association of breeders; if Ireland was represented at such a conference; if he will encourage, as far as possible, the association of this country with such a European association; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I understand that the conference to which the Deputy refers was attended by a representative of the Mink Farmers' Association of Ireland. The question of membership of the European Association is a matter for the farmers themselves.

Does the Minister realise the importance of the mink industry to the economy? Will he ensure that the greatest possible encouragement is given by the Department to those engaged in that very important industry?

It is unnecessary to ask that question.
