Vol. 226 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Extension of Airport Facilities.

5.

asked the Minister for Transport and Power whether the introduction of the Jumbo Jets on the transatlantic route will necessitate any improvements, alternations or extensions of the existing landing and passenger handling facilities at Shannon and Dublin airports; and, if so, the extent of such improvements and alternations at each airport.

The requirements of the new Jumbo Jets at Shannon and Dublin Airports are being studied in my Department but it will not be possible for some time to indicate precisely what new works will be required at the airports to meet them.

Would the Parliamentary Secretary indicate whether in relation to the provision of the Jumbo Jets there is any danger visualised to occupants of the 15-storey blocks of flats erected quite close to the airport?

Will the Parliamentary Secretary not agree that with the trend towards large capacity aircraft, the obvious approach is to have Shannon Airport as the terminal for all transatlantic traffic? Then there will be no danger to Dublin.

Neither supplementary arises specifically out of the question. In reply to Deputy Larkin, I am quite satisfied that aspect has been fully considered.
