Vol. 226 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Tourist Industry Employment.

5.

asked the Minister for Transport and Power the number of extra personnel employed in the tourist industry from 1962 to 1965, having regard to the 50 per cent growth in receipts from tourists during the same period; and if he will give a break-down of the various types of additional employment.

Employment attributable to the tourist industry is spread over a wide range of activities such as hotels, catering establishments, licensed premises, transport undertakings, car hire firms and the retail trade. It is not possible, therefore, to compile precise statistics of the number of persons employed in the industry.

I am informed by Bord Fáilte that a study carried out in 1965 showed that, when account is taken of the effects of the spread of tourism receipts through the economy, about 15 per cent of all national employment, equivalent to about 160,000 jobs, depends ultimately on the tourist industry, although only a minority of these jobs are front-line tourist jobs. In the narrower field of the hotel industry, the numbers employed in Dublin City at the peak of the season are estimated to have risen from 2,670 in 1962 to 3,570 in 1965, an increase of about one-third.
