Vol. 227 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Kerry Reactor Cattle.

23.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries the reason for the acceptance by his Department of only one reactor out of a number tagged in each case in the herds of six farmers in the Glencar area of County Kerry.

The final interpretation of the results of tests carried out under the BTE Scheme is a matter for my Department. This is done on the basis of the test reports furnished by the veterinary surgeons and other relevant information.

In the Glencar area, all the animals which were classed as reactors by my Department's veterinary officers have been purchased. A number of other animals which had been tagged by the private veterinary surgeon were adjudged to be inconclusive, and these will be tested again. If they are then deemed to be positive reactors, my Department will be prepared to purchase them. The new tests will be carried out as soon as the regulations permit.
